Housing justice for immigrant families

December 3, 2019

Four immigrant families have claimed a major victory for housing justice in Revere, securing a settlement of $160,000 from a neglectful landlord. These families lived in dangerous and unhealthy conditions for more than a year - amid multiple housing code violations, from water leaks, roof damage, and exposed electrical wires to an illegal basement, no heating system, and missing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

These families suffered the building conditions for too long. Thankfully, they found the support they needed at the Chelsea Collaborative, attending a tenants' rights workshop in 2018. They were connected with attorneys from Greater Boston Legal Services, increased understanding of housing laws and tenants' rights, and developed a plan to hold their landlord accountable.

With legal advice and ongoing support from GBLS and the Collaborative, the tenants documented their housing conditions and code violations. It took time and persistence, but ultimately they prevailed and the four immigrant families will receive a settlement totaling $160,000!
